My wife and I travel every year the week of August 25th to celebrate our anniversary and usually stay somewhere around the Caribbean. Overall, we really enjoyed the staff and the property here and cant wait to come back.… There is also a CVS right around the corner that sells snacks and wine if you want to stock up since the island closes earlier now due to COVID. The location of the resort is also perfect it’s literally a block or 2 away from Duval street and right by the waterfront area (pier, Mallory Square, shopping, bars, etc.). We did see a couple large Iguanas on the property too which we loved seeing. Up front in the hotel is a turtle enclosure we really enjoyed watching them and they also have a Macaw apparently, but he was always elsewhere. They also have a little beach area with lounges, etc. ![]() I recommend you bring water shoes though, as you do you need to walk over several meters of rocks to reach the nice sandy area in the ocean. We chose the Hyatt because they have their own private little beach which was also very nice. The pool was great because there weren’t a ton of guests, but it might feel small if it was packed. The fish tacos and club sandwich were both great. We only ate lunch while at the resort due to so many restaurants on the island, but the food was really good. They would run drinks and food to you while sitting by the pool or you could join them by the really nice bar area and watch TV. The pool was our main destination during the day and Meghan and Ashley (trainee) were wonderful taking care of us. Due to COVID housekeeping wasn’t running daily which was totally understandable, but they were only a call away for anything we needed. Our room 2401 was fantastic! It had 2 balconies, a living room and the best full ocean view from the resort (it’s at the top, 4th floor). The lady at the desk mentioned low occupancy due to the recent hurricane and asked if we wanted to upgrade to the best room at the resort for a nominal nightly fee and we gladly accepted. The Hyatt is only a 10-15 minute Uber from the airport which should cost $18 total (same price as a 2 person taxi) and check in was a breeze. My wife and I recently returned from a 4 day long weekend at the Hyatt Centric and absolutely loved it! We’ve stayed at another resort on the island before and wanted to try something new and were so glad we did. ![]() In total, more than 2,500 farmers applied the technology across the two study sites. As farmers started to see the benefits of the contour bunding, they began paying to implement the technology in their own fields. We worked with a local NGO, which provided a contour line-marking service to farmers for only USD 10 per farm. ![]() We installed equipment to measure run-off, soil erosion and soil moisture in both bunded and non-bunded fields.įrom the start of the project in 2014, our researchers were able to demonstrate to farmers and regional agricultural bureau experts that the level of run-off collected after heavy rains from the bunded fields was lower than from the non-bunded ones. At each technology park, we constructed contour bunding in some areas and left other areas free of intervention, before sowing locally grown crops. Our research team began by establishing technology parks within each study site to conduct agronomic and environmental monitoring, and demonstrate the benefits of contour bunding to farmers. Cotton is an important cash crop in both areas. In response to these climatic conditions, Bougouni farmers tend to grow maize and sorghum, while those living in Koutiala cultivate millet and other dryland crops. The sites had differing agro-ecologies, with Bougouni receiving 1,060 mm mean annual rainfall, and Koutiala 862 mm. These districts lie within Sikasso, a region of Sudanean savanna with agriculture characterized by rainfed, small-scale crop, livestock and integrated agro-pastoral farming systems. The two sites comprised four villages in Bougouni district and five villages in Koutiala district. If trees are used to strengthen the bund, then it can also provide animal fodder and reduce the need for free grazing, particularly during the dry season. It is aimed at reducing run-off and increasing water filtration to reduce soil erosion and nutrient loss. Contour bunding involves laying points of equal elevation along the contour of a sloping field and then constructing a bund, or barrier, along the contour. The first paper focused on the use of contour bunding at study sites in two semiarid districts of southern Mali. Our findings, outlined in two new publications, show that practices such as contour bunding, infiltration trenches, enclosure-based management and water-spreading weirs can help to reduce the effects of drought, limit soil loss, restore ecosystem services and enhance agricultural production. Scientists at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), in collaboration with partner organizations, investigated the effects of such interventions. Various land- and water-management practices introduced in recent years have sought to enhance farmers' resilience to environmental shocks, before climate changes progress further. Under climate change, the situation is worsening for example, many of the worst natural disasters recorded in East Africa have taken place in the past decade or two. Occasionally the link is to a commercial product in which case it should be understood that this does not imply any endorsement of the product by iSQAPER.Communities inhabiting Africa's drylands frequently suffer from torrential floods and recurrent droughts. On May 8, 2009, a powerful storm system slammed Joplin, knocking out power to KODE and knocking down the tower of sister station KSNF. The same year, it was announced KSNF and KODE would merge, with building expansion planned at the KSN studios. It helps that the bugs I've run into so far have not been of the show-stopping variety. Nevertheless, if you're the sort who's not put off by the unpredictable nature of early software releases, feel free to download the iOS 17 release the moment it becomes available. If that's your attitude, I'm wondering why you haven't already install the iOS 17 public beta. I am a Viking who dines on danger and laughs at the unknown I fear no software bugs and need to be an early adopter. Your new iPhone will ship with iOS 17 on board no matter which iPhone 15 model you wind up buying. Like the person who already upgraded to the iOS 17 beta, you've already made your choice. That means any fixes will get to you first as will features that won't ship until later iOS 17 updates like the new Journal app. Even better, they'll continue to arrive as betas before the general public downloads them. Here's some good news, assuming your experience with the new software has been as positive as my iOS 17 beta hands-on time: If you're running the iOS 17 beta, you've already upgraded.Īpple is going to keep sending updates your way, even after the full version of iOS 17 ships to the general public. Who should update to iOS 17 and who should wait ![]() If we had to guess, we'd circle the week of September 18, with the iOS 17 update likely becoming available in the early part of the week. That would place the release sometime between the end of the Apple event on September event and the likely iPhone 15 ship date on September 22. ![]() ![]() And since Apple likely doesn't want a bunch of iOS upgraders hitting its servers at the same time people are trying to set up their new iPhones, you'd expect the iOS 17 update to arrive just ahead of the iPhone 15 ship date. Based on Apple's usual time frame for releasing products after their launch event, we anticipate that the new phones will start shipping on September 22.īecause the iPhone 15 will ship with iOS 17 pre-installed, you'd imagine that the iOS 17 release would be timed to coincide with the arrival of the new phones. But Apple tipped its hand when it set a September 12 date for its next product launch. It is used in many local delicacies as an ingredient, flavoring, and colorant. Ube, also known as purple yam is a popular root crop in the Philippines. Can you spread it on bread since it is cheese? I did once and I made a pretty yummy ice cream sandwich! Ube Quezo Real is an extremely popular flavor in the Philippines. Putting two and two together, it would not sound so strange at all. Cheese Photo from Selecta PhilippinesĪ lot of people really find cheese-flavored ice cream weird but ice cream is essentially made of milk and cheese is also made of milk. Calamansi-flavored ice cream is also served at the 1 st Colonial Grill in Legazpi City and those who have had a taste of it say it has a refreshing flavor: sour but overall creamy just how ice cream should be. Calamansi Photo from Ī citrus-flavored ice cream sounds too unconventional for me but if I’m ever offered a scoop of calamansi ice cream, I would gladly accept it. Among all the ice cream flavors of the Philippines, this one’s a personal favorite. Avocado is sweet and creamy, making it a perfect component for making home-made ice cream. Some people I know, including myself, prefer avocado for its protein content. Avocado Photo by Jer ChungĪvocado is a favorite fruit shake flavor and it is a great ice cream flavor too. Plus, it would be like tasting several ice cream flavors of the Philippines all at the same time! Halo-halo ice cream is sold in most dairy shops all over the country. For those who would like to take their halo-halo experience to the next level, a tub of ice cream in the same flavor should do the trick. This heavenly concoction of ice, milk, pearls, nata de coco, beans, caramelized plantains, jackfruit slices, ube, leche flan and other tasty ingredients is a summer staple. Halo-halo may very well be the Philippines’ national dessert. Do not be deceived by the pink, sweet-looking ice cream served on your table, a spoonful after and you will think your throat has gone afire. When in Legazpi City in Albay, look up the 1 st Colonial Grill, a restaurant that serves some of the most bizarre ice cream flavors in the country. I am personally addicted to it that I often disregard its adverse effects on my throat and voice. In fact, I have never met anyone who declined an invitation to a cone or cup of one. Corridor is my go-to beer and liqueur store. In Maryland, it does not get much better when considering the combination of selection and value than Corridor. I wouldn't go out of my way to go to this place on a regular basis, only if it's close to you then dropping in once in awhile wont hurt, just dont waste your time asking questions here you'll get nowhere. But only go to this place if you know what you want, or you just happen to be in the area. If you want to maybe grab some mixed 6 regular brews to try, and also just pass by to take a look it doesn't hurt. You're telling me 2 weeks later you can't even give me a simple piece of cardboard? Not even grab an emptied one of say Bud Light? Seriously you can't even think? An employee couldn't even produce me a simple 6 pack holder, claiming nah we got cleared out after Super Bowl, and then just walked off. ![]() In fact I ran into more distributors here who were just dropping stuff off and looked more like people who ran the store, and their answers were ironically more useful then the staff. While you can approach them and ask them for things, the vast majority of them know nothing about the beers or product at all, or what is coming in, or what might be coming. However, the general selection and imports is also not as big as your typical Total Wines. It doesn't strike me as a place that is frequented often by big beer fans, so once in awhile you can find some straggling interesting bottles. However, the selection here is a little bit less with a few exceptions on the shelves than other Total Wines in the DC beltway area. Here though, it's just inside Anne Arundel outside of Montgomery county thus the prices are a heck of a lot more reasonable. This is basically a Total Wine store, and with that comes the usual Total Wine selection. Hated to do, but used the lion's share of it as draino, as I just couldn't choke it down. One of the beers they recommend she purchase for me is a Sam Smith's "Taddy Porter!" About as far left of a sweet/milk stout as you can get IMHO. Tells one of there "aisle" experts that I like "sweet stouts"-Mackeson being my all-time favorite. The "Mrs" goes to a "Total Wine" for a birthday-build-a-6 for me. Said she would get back to me, but never did (Not good across the board.) Luckily the "old-school" Eby's in Wheaton bailed me out at the last 2nd with a 1/6th of Sam Adams Oktoberfest.Ģ. Ordered/reserved far in advance of the event and when I checked in with them several days before pickup, they casually informed me they didn't/wouldn't have my keg: (Presumably no one thought it necessary to call or notify me on this!) I asked the manager to recommend a possible replacement, as I was in a bind if I couldn't produce a keg. Had an unpleasant dealing with them in Fall 14' on a 1/6 keg of Yuengling Oktoberfest. Note: Some of the singles extremely $$$: Most notably the Belgians.ġ. couldn't find my Mackeson XXX Stout for instance, even though I'd been purchasing this at the Village Pump in College Park for much of the past winter. This isn't to suggest they have absolutely everything however, which they don't. 6 or 4 packs of things, that maybe you'd only find in singles elsewhere. ![]() One thing they probably have the upper-hand on-over anyone else-is in quantity packaging: I.e. They trend toward trying to stock shelves logically I.e. Most of the major players and country's are represented. No question about the amount of beer, complete with a selection of singles. Interesting place: Really feels almost a "supermarket" or box store as opposed to that of liquor store-the aisles of booze notwithstanding! Prices seemed fair to me overall.Īfter reading other reviews here, I'll have to find myself a total wine outside of MD to see if the selection is even better. The most expensive was a $3 bottle of Full Tilt Berger Cookie Stout, but I didn't buy any international beer, where prices looked to be around the $5 or more for a single pint. I had to try really hard to not buy expensive beers. My 2 custom 6-packs out the door was luckily only $28.10 including tax. My friend and I refuse to buy "expired" or old beer, in which I had to put at least 20 bottles back on the shelf. I'd suggest they get beers about to expire into a discount section and get them out of the store. The main thing I had a problem with as I was building my two 6-packs is that I was checking our expiration dates and there were a lot of beers that were best by almost a year ago. I didn't bother talking to staff, so I can't really rate the service, and was forced to give them something, so a 5 it is. They have some glassware, but not much, and only for big names like shock top or sam adams.Ĭompared to Perfect Pour and other places in the area, this selection is among the best. I only checked out the beer section, but its basically 2 long rows of beers that are divided into regional, international, seasonal, and then singles and 6-packs by type. ![]() Stationary seating is available.īeyond All Boundaries is captioned via monitors in front of the main screen. It's the old adage: "War is long periods of boredom punctuated by moments of sheer terror." No other submarine movie so completely lulls you into the claustrophobic rhythms of a stir-crazy crew, only to torpedo that tedium with shock and awe. ![]() ![]() It's still three-and-a-half anxious hours in a tin can - but nothing compared to the nearly five-hour edit created for German TV.įellowship films where a group sets out on a quest always have that brief interlude where the heroes make camp, start a fire, and share a meal. This definitive director's cut has better sound and picture but spares no length. That's the haunting prologue to Wolfgang Petersen's 1981 submarine classic "Das Boot," which got an excellent redux in 1997. Of the 40,000 men who went to sea in German U-boats in World War II, 30,000 never returned. If submarine movies are a microcosm of a global society, this film argues that without cooperation between East and West, no one will be left alive. In any event, by the time British and Norwegian rescuers were permitted to help (spoiler alert!) it was too late for all 118 souls aboard. The only quibble is it blames a random admiral when many have pointed the finger at Vladimir Putin directly. The Russian military is portrayed as a force in decline whose leadership would rather sacrifice its own soldiers than admit weakness. "The Command" is a western European production with a stellar cast including Colin Firth. Ironically, the film's only real flaw is it distractingly plays with aspect ratio as letterboxes move in and out at key moments. And unlike so many older titles only available in a hideous 16x9 crop, "The Command" comes as director Thomas Vinterberg intended, in full widescreen glory. So forget the haters this sci-fi adventure is a thrill if you go in understanding it's a B-movie in big-budget scuba gear.ĭespite a middling budget, "The Command" has some of the most flawless and subtle cinematography of any submarine thriller. Even surrounded by super-geniuses, it's up to Norman's intuitive instincts as a shrink to solve the riddle of a mysterious alien consciousness. Liev Schreiber and Sharon Stone round out this perfectly cast crew, each catching cabin fever in the face of their strange discovery. This was Crichton at the peak of his sci-fi powers, and nobody was better at blending popular science into technically plausible thriller plots. Jackson is fantastic as the team's resident mathematician who is suspiciously resigned to spending the anxious hours lying about reading another story about underwater peril, "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea."Ĭritics absolutely hated this movie, particularly the ending, but the conceit is just too intriguing to dismiss. Dustin Hoffman plays Norman, a psychologist called upon for a secret mission to a deep-sea habitat where it turns out a strange and possibly extraterrestrial orb has been found buried inside a sunken spaceship. |
